NYorkerWriting in the New Yorker this week, Vermont environmentalist Bill McKibben provides a thought-provoking overview of Green Energy’s potential game-changing power in our 21st century imperial energy economy, with a focus on the role of public utilities as sites of struggle (and potentially revolutionary change), and the solar panel as the “most disruptive energy technology” of our era. We in the Vermont independence movement have been making the case for a more renewable energy portfolio for Vermont AND more aggressive Vermont-centric control over our public utilities since 2005. Rick Foley’s “Green New Deal” for Vermont remains one of the most forward-thinking treatments of this subject, available as a chapter in our MOST LIKELY TO SECEDE book. “I’m interested in electric cars…because I want to take market share away from oil,” says NRG C.E.O. David Crane in this article. “It’s a brutal fight for market share.” And with Big Oil and Its Minions working aggressively to prevent renewable energy alternatives from cracking open more opportunities in our emerging 21st century Age of Energy Limits, we’ve got serious work ahead. Free Vermont, and long live the Untied States.
